Embrace Change: Fall’s Significant Role

As the extreme summer heat begins to dissipate and the golden warmth of Fall makes its entrance,
the changing of the seasons symbolizes more than the picture-perfect changes to our environment. Fall
is the time of year that provides a valuable image/metaphor for personal growth and development. Fall
symbolizes a time of transition and reflection, making it an ideal period for exploring personal
development in therapy. The longer nights and cooler temperatures of Fall is a time of reflection. As the
outside environment slows down, it is the perfect invitation for us to reflect and turn inward. This period
of reflection can be extremely beneficial in therapy. It can be a time to take advantage of the
opportunity to explore our inner world, understand our emotions, and make sense of our experiences.
Taking time to reflect can also be a time to set new goals, and make necessary adjustments which can
set the tone for the last few months of the year.

Embrace Change

Fall is a time of transformation. When trees lose their leaves, it creates an all-important reminder
that letting go can be both a natural and beautiful process. The old saying “out with the old and in with
the new” isn’t just reserved for the new year. This shedding of the old to make way for the new
parallels the therapeutic journey. In counseling, clients often face the challenge of confronting and
releasing past experiences, beliefs, or behaviors that no longer serve them. The natural cycle of letting
go that this season brings can be a powerful symbol for this therapeutic process.

Connect and Reconnect

It is no surprise Thanksgiving is a widely celebrated holiday during Fall. During this time of year friends,
and families make more of an effort to connect/reconnect and spend time together. When celebrating
Thanksgiving, connection and gratitude are at the heart of this occasion. During this time, it is beneficial
to be reflective and recognize and appreciate the positive things in our lives. The practice of gratitude
can foster resilience which can in turn improve overall mental health.

Here are two ways to enjoy the fall season and take full advantage of this magical time of year:

1. Seasonal Journaling– Writing down experiences and feelings related to the changing of the
seasons can be a great tool for self-exploration. Think about how you will embrace change and flurish during this time of the year.
2. Nature walks– Spending time in nature can be stimulating and invigorating and provide
additional opportunities for inspiration and reflection.
3. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle– While Thanksgiving is typically a time of family, friends, fun, and
FOOD, it is important to get adequate sleep, engage in some sort of physical activity, and eat
nutritious foods. Balance is key even while enjoying the wonderful foods during the Fall holiday
season.

The change from summer to fall affords a meaningful opportunity for growth and development. Life is a continuous journey of personal change and improvement. It’s time to embrace this change! While enjoying all the wonderful things Fall brings, let it also be a time for reflection, growth, and renewal.
