The Benefits and Beauty of Embracing Acceptance

One of the most powerful tools for living a fulfilling life is acceptance. Acceptance plays an extremely dynamic part in mental health and the optimization of emotional well-being. At its foundation, acceptance simply the notion of embracing present feelings, emotions, experiences and thoughts just as they are. It is being at peace with things beyond our control that we cannot change. Acceptance can be a tool of transformation and evolution as it allows for acknowledgement without judgement which is vital to healing. At its foundation, acceptance is recognizing all emotions without rejection or discounting them. Whether working through depression, anxiety, trauma, or grief accepting emotions is vital and critical on the road to healing which in turn can lead to positive lifestyle change.

Suffering and Internal Conflict

One way acceptance is beneficial is that it reduces suffering and internal conflict. Often times, the greater the attempt to keep unpleasant thoughts, feelings, and emotions at bay the more intense and all-consuming they become. By practicing acceptance, we recognize and submit to the understanding that it is perfectly okay to feel your feelings without the guilt and the incorrect belief that negative that needs to be suppressed or ignored.

Personal Growth

Another way the concept of acceptance is beneficial in the therapeutic setting is that it aids in personal growth. Acceptance allows recognition and reflection concerning the things we are unable to change within ourselves and our lives. Through acceptance, the internal battle within our minds ceases allowing the focus to shift to self-improvement, clarity, and empowerment. When practicing acceptance, we give ourselves permission to focus on areas of improvement and the positive steps to take in that direction. Acceptance is abandoning unrealistic expectations and pressures as well as moving past any feelings of embarrassment. Acceptance makes way for compassion which is vital for maintaining positive mental health. Being mindful of the fact that we are “perfectly imperfect” aids us all on our journey towards acceptance.

Self Awareness

Finally, the concept of acceptance creates a greater sense of self awareness, which allows for an emotionally safe healing space. Acceptance removes judgement and opens the way for vulnerability and the strength in acknowledging the beauty of each and every moment we experience whether pleasant or not so pleasant. Acceptance teaches that thoughts are not necessarily truths and therefore have no power over actions.

In the end, the goal concerning acceptance is to live in a state of peace with the understanding that maintaining contentment and control do not go hand in hand. True acceptance is simply letting go and trusting the flow of life. When we truly embrace acceptance, we let go of the notion that we have the power to change things outside of our circle of control and simply appreciate the beauty of life, no matter where we are. The more acceptance is used and practiced, the greater the chance to comprehend that each moment has a purpose and a lesson to learn from.
