A Fresh Start: Taking Care of Your Mental Health This New Year

The new year is a blank canvas with new possibilities all around. We get excited to change and transform ourselves.

When you create plans of eating healthier or saving more money, do not forget about your mental health. It deserves equal focus. Look back and reflect over the previous year before moving forward.

Stop and think before you leap into creating goals. Recall the past year.

Ask yourself:

  • What made you happy?
  • What stressed you out?
  • What did you learn about yourself?
  • What are some trends you notice in your life?

This inventory is not about judging oneself harshly, but it is about realizing what makes you happy. I like to sit and have a cup of tea and reflect. Some write what is in their minds and others may speak to a friend. Anyway, that seems right to you is ok.

Keep Your Goals Simple

Here’s where many of us mess up. We create huge, complicated goals that sound impressive but feel overwhelming. I will work out every day, or I won’t be anxious anymore! These assertions are not realistic and can set us up for disappointment and feeling bad about ourselves.

Instead, simplify everything

  • Go out on mini walks regularly so that you can re-energize your body and refresh your mind.
  • Set aside time to make calls to a friend to increase connectedness.

It is really true that when you take small steps, you will not quit. Large, ambitious aims can simply make us feel a failure simply because we are unable to live up to them.

Make Self-Care Real, Not Perfect

Self-care does not necessarily need to be fancy or expensive; it is about basic practices that contribute to your overall wellness. True self-care begins with the following basics:

  • Going to bed at a consistent time.
  • Eating food that nourishes you.
  • Being with individuals who love you.
  • Developing healthy boundaries and saying no when needed.
  • Reach out for assistance when you are overwhelmed.
  • Treating yourself well, even when things do go wrong.

Remember, not all plans will work out, but our mindset moving forward can make a difference. Self-care does not imply being perfect but instead create habits for taking care of ourselves daily.

Create Your Own Accountability System

You know what helps? When you establish a self-accountability system that actually fits your lifestyle. This could be checking in with yourself every Sunday evening, keeping a simple journal where you write three sentences about your day or connecting with a friend or family member to discuss how your week went.

The key is creating a system that is easy enough that you’ll actually do it. Complicated systems fail. Simple ones succeed.

Moving Forward with Hope

This new year can be different. Not perfect, but different. Try getting involved in activities that don’t place a strain on your mental health but help build it. Create targets that are attainable and will motivate you to keep moving forward. The goal is to create a self-care routine that fits into your everyday life.

Start small. Be kind to yourself. Remember your emotional well-being is just as important as caring for your physical body.
