After a long time in a relationship, it can be easy to assume you know everything there is to know about your partner. We often stop taking the time to update our understanding of who they are, what matters to them, and how their hopes and dreams may have changed. At the same time, many couples seek counseling because they feel disconnected or as though they are drifting apart.
The truth is, our partners are constantly evolving, and what we know about them needs to evolve, too.
Relationship expert Dr. John Gottman suggests that one of the hallmarks of a healthy, lasting relationship is having detailed “Love Maps.” So, what exactly is a love map? Simply put, it’s an internal guide to your partner’s world. It includes your knowledge of who they are as an individual—their history, current experiences, values, stresses, dreams, and goals for the future. Love maps help us understand how to show up for our partners in ways that truly make them feel loved and understood.
While the concept may sound simple, Dr. Gottman considers love maps foundational to healthy relationships and essential for long-term success. One of the greatest gifts of being in a committed partnership is feeling truly seen and accepted for who we are. That sense of connection requires ongoing curiosity and intentional effort. In other words, we should never stop getting to know our partners.
