So you’ve decided you want to embark on your therapeutic journey and begin attending therapy sessions. Congratulations! This is a big step towards growth and self-reflection, and can be something that takes a lot of courage and bravery to begin. Now comes the logistics…how do I even find a therapist? How do I choose one that is right for me? In this blog, we will explore how to choose a therapist: What things to consider and what questions to ask.
Step 1: Define the problem
What is it that you are looking for help for? Whether you are experiencing a life transition, want to process childhood trauma, or if you are experiencing anxiety or depression symptoms, you ideally want to have an idea of what your presenting problem is. This will help you find someone that is skilled in that specific area and will give you the ability to communicate to a therapist what you are looking for, when you do find them.
A small note here: Sometimes we don’t know what the name is for what we are experiencing, and that is okay. The right therapist can help you define the problem as well, but you may have less knowledge going into choosing a therapist from the start. Focus on what you are having difficulty with currently, and what symptoms you may be experiencing. Once you begin the process, a good therapist will help guide you toward someone else if they are not right for you.
Step 2: Reach out
Setting up a therapy session will work differently depending on the therapist or therapy center you go through. Sometimes, you may have a phone consultation beforehand, and this can be a good chance to feel out if this therapist is a good fit for you or not. At Tx Harmony Counseling, for example, you will reach an administrative assistant that will be able to match you with the best fit depending on your presenting problem and what you are looking for, as well as other factors like your availability. Other times, you might be referred to a therapist through a doctor’s office, or seek guidance from those in your life that may have had experience with attending therapy.
Step 3: Evaluating the fit
Once you have reached your first session, remember that you are searching for someone that you will be building a therapeutic relationship with. Good therapists want you to find the best fit for you and your needs as much as you want to find that, so feel free to ask questions about credentialing, experience, specializations, and the type of therapy they utilize. There are lots of other things to consider, such as affordability, cultural competence, and location. Keep in mind that the most important factor is that you feel comfortable with this counselor. We are unlikely to progress towards your goals if you don’t feel safe, and a good therapist should be working to create a safe space for you to explore your challenges, past experiences, and future goals.
It is okay if this process takes time and a few tries to find the right fit for you. But you don’t have to do it alone. At Tx Harmony Counseling Center, we’re here to help you take that first step and connect with someone who’s a good fit for your needs.
